An AJ update: He is doing a bit better. Yesterday morning, he said some vision had returned - possible a couple of degrees. When I asked what he could now that he could not see the day before, he said that (when we were in the car) when he looked straight ahead, he could now see my nose and cheek, and the day before he couldn't see me at all. Yippee! His vision didn't improve during the day at all, so we will see if it improved during the night again.
